Harry "Doc" S. Caskey, MD

On January 12 our dad, Harry “Doc” S. Caskey, MD, age 91 of Clintonville, slipped peacefully from this earthly life into the arms of Jesus and the joy of Heaven.

Harry Samuel Caskey was born at home on October 15, 1925 at Sylvan Rest Resort, Lac Vieux Desert in the township of Phelps, Vilas Co, WI.  He was the tenth and youngest child of Sylvester and Agnes (Lindstrom) Caskey.  Harry graduated from Phelps Union Free High School in Phelps with straight A's, as Valedictorian in June 1943. Prior to graduation he took the Navy V-12 exams and was sworn into the USNR in April, entering active naval duty on July 1, 1943.  Following boot camp, Harry was sent to Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA where he entered a premedical program. He remained in the Navy his first year of medical school at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. He was discharged from active duty in February of 1946. Harry completed medical school as a civilian, graduating from Marquette University's College of Medicine in June of 1948 at the age of 22 years. In 1951 with the Korean War being fought, Harry volunteered  for a two year hitch in the Air Force. He re-enlisted for an extended tour so he could go to Germany with the medical group as its commanding officer. Although a practicing flight surgeon, Harry’s duties as hospital administrator and Medical Group Commander had him seeing fewer and fewer patients. Plans for the Air Force as a career were reconsidered and he was discharged as a Captain in December 1954. Harry joined a private practice partnership with Dr. Wm. Arnold at the Clintonville Clinic. He remained in service in Clintonville as a “GP” for over forty years, practicing solo for a time and finally among a staff of 140 physicians. Harry delivered over 4,000 babies, 2,000 of them in Clintonville, with 62 sets of twins and one set of triplets. Harry retired after fifty years in medicine on June 30, 1998. Harry met his wife Florence in Milwaukee, where she was a nurse and night supervisor at Milwaukee Hospital. They married on August 20, 1949, enjoying 56 years of marriage before Florence passed away in 2006. Harry and Florence had five children:

Debra (Thomas) Olson, Paul (Joan) Caskey, Mark (Lilly) Caskey, Laurie (Bradd) Zeuske  and Kathleen (James) Siegel.

Nine grandchildren: Erin Schroeder (Steve), Levi Olson (Amy), Eden Keene (Bobby), Elia Wilson (Elias), Sean Caskey (Sara), Mara Jonet (Corey), Shannon Caskey, Angela Siegel, Isaac Siegel and seven great-grandchildren: Caskey, Keena, Micah, Riley, Elissa and two step-great-grandchildren: Chelsea and R.J. Keene.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence, siblings; Elmer, Edith, Frieda, Alice, Chet, Gene, Jesse, John, & Ethel.

Harry kept fit in mind, body and spirit. His work as a doctor helped keep all three strong.  He was a life-long learner and his favorite pass time was reading, always having a book on hand that he was reading or re-reading! He enjoyed the arts, sharing his appreciation for Shakespeare, music, theater, and literature with his family. Harry exercised regularly at the Rec Center and loved winter sports, still downhill snow skiing at 84 years young!  In the warmer months he enjoyed swimming, gardening, and yard work.  Harry was active in his church and community. He served on the school board of St. Martin Lutheran School for many years and the Clintonville Public School Board from 1967-1979.  He taught Sunday School and Adult Bible classes and held numerous offices at St. Martin church. In 1977 he received the Citizen Award as a friend of education. He was team physician for the High School basketball, football, and gymnastic teams. In 1984 he received the Distinguished Service Award for enthusiastic leadership and support in the field of interscholastic athletics from the National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics. The State Medical Society of Wisconsin chose Harry as Physician Citizen of Wisconsin for the year 1997. Harry’s greatest loves were for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, his family, helping others through his career in medicine, and his community of Clintonville which he dedicated more than half his life to serving.

The Celebration of the Earthly and Eternal Life of Harry Caskey will be held 12 PM Thursday, January 19, 2017 at the St. Martin Lutheran Church, 100 S. Clinton Ave., Clintonville with the Rev. Vilas Mazemke officiating. Military honors will be conducted outside of the church following the service by members of the Clintonville American Legion Post #63, VFW Post #664, and American Legion Auxiliary Unit #63. Inurnment will take place at the Graceland Cemetery in Clintonville at a later date. Friends may call at the Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home & Crematory, 53 N. Main Street, Clintonville from 4 PM until 8 PM on Wednesday and at the church on Thursday from 11 AM until the time of the service.
