He grew up in Bruce, WI and attended a little country school for elementary and later attended Bruce High School. Jim enlisted in the Navy at the end of his junior year to serve his country aboard the U.S.S. Paul Revere. He worked as a boiler operator on the ship, as well as a gunner on PT boats shuttling Marines into battle. While in the service, boxing and martial arts were activities he enjoyed. He was united in marriage to Marlene Bergstrom in Chicago on March 5, 1960. Jim was discharged from the Navy in 1963, and resided in the Chicago area working as a printer and typesetter; most notably setting type at the Chicago Field Museum. Jim and family moved back to Wisconsin in 1969 were he was employed as a printer at Graphic Composition, Menasha for a short time. He finally settled in Bear Creek in 1970 where he started a pig farm; he also worked for Glass Fab., New London, and Hotz Mfg., Shawano during that time. Jim was hired at Walker Forge, Clintonville where he worked as a machinist, retiring after 14 years.
