Edward Andrew Wanta, a gentleman of 84 years (loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa, who enjoyed “taking a ride,” and sharing his Polish quarter with everyone he met), died at his home in Clintonville, on Monday, June 28, 2010, surrounded by this devoted family. Edward was born on November 15, 1925, Town of Lanark, to John Martin and Theodora Veronica (Ostrowski) Wanta, the eleventh of thirteen children. He attended P. J. Jacobs High School, in Stevens Point, and enlisted in the US Navy on January 22, 1944. He received an honorable discharge on February 12, 1946, serving as a Coxswain. Ed trained at USNTS, in Farragut, Idaho. He served on the USN Tadgen, Shoemaker, California, the USS LSM 32, LSM, Flotilla 3, and the USS Casablanca CVE-SS. Ed received the Victory Medal for WWII, three stars for serving in the Asiatic Pacific, and the Philippine Liberation Star. Ed was awarded the American Legion Certificate, from Legion Post 63, for 50 years or more of service. He was a member of Post 664 in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His name and service are included on the national registry at the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. Ed enlisted in the US Navy before receiving his high school diploma. Because of the provisions of Wisconsin Act 73, his family was able to present him with his high school diploma at his 75th birthday celebration, at the American Legion Hall in Clintonville, on November 12, 2000. On June 18, 1946, at St. Stephen’s Church, Stevens Point, Edward married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Marie Sorenson (they met while he was employed as a lifeguard at Bukolt Park). On November 5, 1976, he lost Virginia to leukemia. Two days following his discharge from the US Navy, Ed began a three-year apprenticeship as a horticulturist, through the G. I. Bill, with Sorenson’s Floral in Stevens Point. In 1951, Eddie and Virginia bought Clintonville Floral Company from George Kemp. The property, which was a small house and lean-to, grew in size to 30,000 square feet. Wanta’s Clintonville Floral was advertised as “the largest greenhouse north of Milwaukee.” A passionate designer and grower, Ed commented during a newspaper interview, “In the winter months, when everything else is frozen, in there (the greenhouse), it’s beautiful. There’s something different about this business.” Ed was a member of Teleflorists, Florafax, a 40 year member of FTD, and served as President of WUMFA (Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Floral Association). On August 23, 1986, Ed married Marlene Kuss, at St. Rose Catholic Church in Clintonville. During his career as a florist, Ed also served as a community leader. He held positions on the city council for over 20 years, serving on every standing committee, including Council President. He was President of the Clintonville Rotary, served Clintonville on the Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years, and was recognized by the Clintonville Police and Fire Commission, in 1988, for serving 10 years on the commission, and eight years as chair of the commission. He also served on the Board of Directors at Dairyman’s State Bank. A devout Catholic, Edward was an active member of St. Peter’s church, Stevens Point, during his early years, and St. Rose Catholic Church, in Clintonville, from 1951-2010. He was named a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. In 2006, Ed was honored by St. Rose Parish, for over 40 years of dedicated service for providing and caring for seasonal plants and flowers for the church. A presentation was made to Ed and Marlene for their contributions, during the mass, with a reception following. Ed was a life-time member of the Clintonville Curling Club, participating in, and winning many bonspiels throughout the state. In the late 1950’s and 60’s, Ed not only sponsored “Wanta’s Floral” bowling teams and softball teams, but was one of their star players. An avid golfer, Ed was a charter member of the Clintonville Riverside Golf Club, and the recipient of the prestigious “Heuer Cup,” He was President of the Golf Club during the 1970’s, and served on its Board of Directors.
