Mary Mathews Obituary

Mary W. Mathews, age 87 of Clintonville, formerly of Embarrass, passed away on Tuesday February 23, 2021 at her residence.

Mary Winniefred Mathews was born May 12, 1933 in Chicago, IL, daughter to the late Frank & Della (O’Connely) Hann. She graduated from Crown Point High School in Indiana and worked for a time at a local roller rink. While employed at Lyle’s Drug Store in Cedar Lake, IN, Mary met Robert E. Mathews. The couple was united in marriage at Holy Name Church in Cedar Lake on April 14, 1956. They moved to Merrillville, IN, where Mary stayed in the home to raise their three children. Mary volunteered at St. Anthony Hospital in Crown Point distributing books and bringing smiles to the patients. She also was a very active parishioner with Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Merrillville. In 1983, Robert and Mary moved to Embarrass, and have been living in the area ever since. Mary worked for a home health care company locally for about 10 years. An active member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Clintonville, Mary served in various capacities within her parish. She really enjoyed cooking for her family and playing cards. She loved listening to Polka music and attended Polka Days in Pulaski on many occasions. Mary will be remembered as a wonderfully loving, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who cherished her family dearly.  

She is survived by her:
Daughters: Marjorie (Wayne) Ziereis, Clintonville; Marie Mathews, Clintonville; & Michelle (Doug) Lamb, Merrillville, IN
Grandchildren: Mitchell (fiance Brianna Wright) Lamb, Kyle (Lauren) Lamb, Morgan (Jake Budde) Lamb, & Lauren (Joe) Sepulveda
Great-grandchildren: Claire & Maesyn
A sister: Patricia Lawrence, Rushford, MN
Also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; 

A memorial mass will be held 11 AM, Saturday, May 15, 2021 at St. Rose Catholic Church, Clintonville, with Fr. Timothy Shillcox, O. Praem officiating.

Visitation will take place from 10 AM until the time of service.
