Anita Schertz Obituary

Anita F. Schertz of Belle Plaine passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at ThedaCare Medical Center in Shawano. She would have been 98 in January.

Anita was born on January 19, 1922 in Tigerton to Albert and Paulina (Miller) Monicke. She spent her early life in Tigerton and Clintonville later moving to a farm near Cloverleaf Lakes in the town of Belle Plaine. Anita was united in marriage on June 26, 1948 to Henry Schertz of Clintonville at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tigerton. They lived their entire married life on the farm. The two were blessed with one son, John. Anita was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and, more recently, a great-grandmother. She was also an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her fierce independence, and her generosity. “Growing old is for the birds,” she would always say. While her body rejected her desire to do many of her favorite things in recent years, her mind remained sharp. She was an avid gardener. She could make any seed grow and tried feverishly to pass on even a fraction of her knowledge to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and baking, doing puzzles visiting with friends and family, Milwaukee Brewers Baseball, and constantly beating her grandchildren in games of Rummy, Crazy 8 or Checkers, even in her 90s. In her earlier years, she enjoyed traveling; visiting places like Alaska, Hawaii and Branson, Missouri with friends and family. More recently, she enjoyed the quiet peacefulness of her farm; watching the birds, squirrels and other wildlife from her window. And though she complained about how much they ate, she enjoyed being able to keep them fat and happy.

Anita is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Cindy Schertz of Embarrass; her grandchildren Ashley and Riley Knapp of De Pere  and Alysha Schertz-Matic of Green Bay; her great grandchildren, Charlotte, baby Knapp, and Enzo; her cousin, Betty Stern of Tigerton; her niece, Judy Schroeder of Clintonville and many friends.

Anita was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Paulina; her husband, Henry Schertz; her sister and brother-in-law, Ralph and Helene Schroeder; her nephew Ronald Schroeder, and her niece, Gloria McGinnis all of Tigerton.

Funeral service will be held at 11 AM Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at St. John Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Pastor Todd Jerabek will officiate and burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Tigerton.

Visitation will be held from 10 AM until time of service at the church.
