James "Jim" L. & Joyce A. Schertz

James “Jim” L. & Joyce A. Schertz ages 86 & 82 of the Town of Bear Creek, passed away unexpectedly Monday, October 30, 2017 as a result of injuries sustained in a motor-vehicle accident that took place on State Hwy. 156 & County Rd. Y. in the Town of Matteson.

James “Jim” Lyle Schertz was born April 29, 1931 in Clintonville, son of the late Frank & Cecelia (Reitzner) Schertz. The former Joyce Ann Schultz was born November 19, 1934 also in Clintonville as the daughter of the late Walter & Elsie (Rehe) Schultz. Jim attended school in Bear Creek while Joyce attended Shawano schools. After a couple of years of farming with his family, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korea conflict and worked as a cook. Joyce worked for the Hansen Glove Factory, Clintonville, and later at Flanagan’s in Bear Creek for a time. After meeting at a barn dance, the young couple was united in marriage on February 19, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bear Creek where they were both current members. Jim then worked briefly for New London Plywood and later was employed Miller Electric Mfg. Co., Appleton until his retirement in 1994 after 32 years. After retirement, Jim drove tractor for Clinton Farms, Bear Creek for many more years. Jim was also a long-time member of the Bear Creek Lion’s Club, and has been recognized with a Melvin-Jones Fellow Award. While not an official member of the Lion’s Club, Joyce certainly used her culinary skills to help with many Lion’s events over the years. Jim loved card games and was a great Sheephead player, although he sometimes cheated when playing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as softball in his younger years. Jim & Joyce always had a large garden together; Joyce loved to grow flowers and can the vegetables they grew. Joyce will be remembered as a phenomenal cook and no one left her house hungry. They bowled couples together and Joyce also bowled in two other women’s leagues. She loved all animals, especially dogs, and together with Jim, raised beef cattle, pigs, chickens, and ducks on their farm. For Jim and Joyce, family was most important; they will be forever remembered for the love and devotion they showed each other, and the love they had for their family.

Grandchildren: Jayme (Katy) Schertz, Beth (Pete) Morton, Dana (Tom) Marsh, & Amanda (Nick) Miller

Great-grandchildren: Rilie, Rogan, Tyler, Jacob, Parker, Brystol, Bailee, Kenzlee, Sean, & Josh

Jim’s brother: Robert Schertz

Joyce’s sister-in-law: Vic Schultz

They were preceded in death by both of their parents; a son-in-law, Frank Young; a great-grandson, Luke Morton; Joyce’s sister, Shirley Schertz; & brothers, Allen & Elly Schultz; Jim’s sister, Dorothy (Joe) Clinton, & brother Ted (Frieda) Schertz.

A memorial mass will be held 12 noon, Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bear Creek with Fr. John “Jack” Mullarkey & Deacon Lincoln Wood officiating. Inurnment will take place after the service in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call on Saturday at the church from 9 AM until the time of the service.
