David W. White

David (Dave) W. White, 67, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 22nd after a valiant 2 year battle against cancer. Dave kept a positive attitude throughout his illness and in June and July, he still felt well enough that he and his wife Lynn fulfilled a dream to travel in the US and Canada in an RV motorhome.

Dave was born in Borger, Texas in September 1949 to Woodrow Wilson White and the late Mary Julia (Kincaid) White. He was preceded in death by his mother and two very special cats. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Lynn, and one special cat. Family members include a sister, Mary Brown, Warren (Robin) White, and Wayne (Sheri) White, nieces and nephews.

As a young adult, Dave enjoyed mountain climbing, and climbed the 46 major peaks of New York’s Adirondack Mountains. He also climbed the Grand Teton in Wyoming. Both he and Lynn climbed Mount Rainier in Washington in 1992. Dave and Lynn met on an Ice Age Trail Sierra Club workday in Hartman Creek State Park and throughout their lives together enjoyed spending time in Nature enjoying all the joys it had to offer. In the 1990’s, Dave & Lynn were active in Wild Ones Natural Landscapers.

Dave married Lynn Nuthals on May 22nd, 1993 at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Green Bay, WI, and wanted very much to make it to their 25th Anniversary in 2018.

Dave and Lynn’s biggest shared passion was wine, and they took vacations to many wine regions around the US and in Portugal over the past 25 years. Prior to his retirement, Dave earned a Certificate in Winemaking, Viticulture, and Enology from the University of California – Davis. Until his cancer diagnosis, Dave owned and operated Midwest Wine Analytics, a testing lab for wineries in the Midwest. He was also an adjunct on-line teacher of Wine Chemistry in the Winemaking program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College/VESTA, leaving a legacy of knowledge with winemakers in Wisconsin and around the United States. Dave and Lynn had the opportunity to build relationships with many individuals not only within the Wisconsin wine industry, but with individuals at wineries across the US.

Dave worked at the Georgia Pacific Neenah Technical Center (formerly James River and Fort James) from 1988 until his retirement in May 2016. His last position was as Senior Manager of Chemistry & Additives. Dave attended Hopkins School in New Haven, CT, and earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York in 1973. He then went on to earn his M.Sc. and PhD in Physical Chemistry with an emphasis in Colloid and Surface Science from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY in 1976. He was a Grantee on 18 U.S. Patents.

Special thanks to longtime Sierra Club & Grape Nut friends Dale and Penny Schaber, Ruthann and Bruce Hetzler, Randy and Connie Connour, work friends Tony and Shirley Awofeso, Bruce and Sarah Kokko, and friend Kathryn Isbill, all who have been especially supportive in recent weeks. Thanks also to his Doctors, Nurses, and Theda Care at Home Hospice Staff, especially Kristy Crum, his Hospice Nurse/Case Manager and Hospice Chaplain Stuart McCoy. Thanks to the staff of Pine Manor Health Care Center in Embarrass for caring for Dave during his final week.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, September 17th 3pm, at Riverview Gardens in Appleton. Funeral arrangements were handled by Eberhardt and Stevenson Funeral Home and Crematory in Clintonville, WI. On-line condolences may be sent to www.eberhardtstevenson.com
